But cells are manufactured, and the manufacturing process is not benign. Over the life cycle of solar cells — from the mining of raw materials to the finished product — just how green are they?

Vasilis M. Fthenakis of Brookhaven National Laboratory and colleagues have the latest analysis, to be published in Environmental Science and Technology. The short answer is that photovoltaic cells are still very green.

The researchers looked at emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants like nitrogen oxide gases and heavy metals from the manufacture of four types of cells. Most of the emissions are results of the electricity used, and the amounts depend in part on the mix of electricity in the grid, or how much comes from coal plants, hydroelectric, nuclear and the like.

The researchers found that thin-film cadmium telluride cells were the greenest, although the differences among the four types were slight. All told, the researchers say, replacing electrical power from the grid with electricity generated by solar cells results in at least an 89 percent reduction in greenhouse gases and pollutants.

Introduction

For many years I've taught a course on science and technology from a historical perspective. The voracious appetite for energy by advanced societies and particularly the United States figures prominently in the course. I comment each semester that when humans are forced finally to stop using fossil fuels, either because of increasing costs or global pollution, there will still be plenty of energy from the sun, particularly in regions lucky enough to have cloudless days most of the year. One day my wife said to me, "Why don't you put your money where your mouth is?" So I did.photovoltaic panels-photovoltaic cell

The decision to install photovoltaic cell panels hinges on where one lives. The amount of sunlight as determined by the climate of one's location and the ability to receive the direct rays of the sun when it is shining helps one to decide if it makes sense to install the panels. On the left and right are images showing available sunlight for the United States and the world respectively. Although our location appears to be ideal because of the available sunlight per year, in actual fact our distance from the Pacific Ocean is only 12 km and coastal fog is a problem part of the year. On the average, the amount of sunlight we get is limited to between 5 and 8 hours per day throughout the year (see the blue strip along the coast in the left image in front of the arrow tip).photovoltaic panels-photovoltaic cell

A roof sloping toward the south in full view of the sky would be ideal. However, our roof line slopes toward the east and the west. There is a chimney near the peak, as you can see.The panels have to be installed where there are no shadows during the day, so we installed our 2.5 kilowatt system on the east-sloping roof with an additional tilt toward the south. There are actually 18 panels each rated at 165 watts which brings the system to a theoretical maximum power output of 2970 watts or 2.97 kilowatts. The rating of 2.5 kilowatts may be due to the installing company knowing that the tilt of our panels would be less than ideal. Maximum output occurs around 11 am each day that the sun shines.

A good energy output per day during the summer is 14 kilowatt hours. A REALLY good day brings 15 and there have been a few exceptional days which brought in 16 kw hours. Cloudless winter days yield around 7.5 kw hours. Rain is something else again. Here is what it looked like on 28 December, 2004 all day. And with more than a little rain. Still, 2.20 kWh wasn't all that bad. There was a day two weeks earlier that achieved only a little more than 0.5 kWh. Note the AC power meter. There may be 271 volts being produced but there isn't enough light to offer even one watt of power.

On some partially cloudy days during the early spring a curious observation can be made as the sun periodically peeks through the clouds. Here are two images on April 22, 2006. Except for the occasional gaps in the clouds, this was NOT a typical sunny day in southern California. But take a look at the meter: 2507 Watts! Structural modifications of any kind carry the risk of unintended consequences. Our installation caused a leak through the bathroom vent during heavy rain as a result of runoff onto the roof and subsequent splashing into the vent. The vent was modified by adding a shield, as shown. Ugly though it may be, it did the trick as demonstrated by another rainstorm shortly after its installation.

Each morning the controller goes through its countdown, synchronizing the inverter phase with that of the grid. When it locks into the phase of the grid the system goes online and electricity begins to flow from the panels. We estimate that it will take 14 years to recoup our out of pocket expenses. Richard Corkish of the Photovoltaics Special Research Centre at the University of New South Wales estimates that it will take between 3 and 7 years to produce enough energy to equal that amount contained in the non-renewable fossil fuels used to fabricate the panels in the first place. The panels are guaranteed for 25 years. The good news is that the panels work silently with no moving parts, pumping excess electrical energy routinely into the electrical grid when we use less than that which is generated. At those times the meter turns backward

The bad news is that over time in an urban area where there is a lot of dustfall, the efficiency drops. In the Los Angeles area several months can go by without rain. These images show what happens after such a period. We have found it advisable to do a once-a-month rinsing of the panels to make them sparkling clean and to bring them back to maximum efficiency.

?We are elated by this breakthrough,?says Frank Dimroth, head of the group III-V ?Epitaxy and Solar Cells at Fraunhofer ISE. ?At all times the entire team believed in our concept of the metamorphic triple-junction solar cells and our success today is made possible only through their committed work over the past years.?

Since 1999, Fraunhofer ISE has been developing metamorphic multi-junction solar cells, which are a special type of solar cells using III-V semiconductor compounds. These cells are made out of thin Ga0.35In0.65P and Ga0.83In0.17As layers on GaAs or Ge substrates. These materials are especially suitable for converting sunlight into electricity. They can be combined together, however, only by applying a trick called metamorphic growth.

In contrast to conventional solar cells, the semiconductors in these cells do not have the same lattice constant (distance between the atoms in a crystalline structure). This makes it difficult to grow the III-V semiconductor layers with a high crystal quality, since at the interface of materials with different lattice constants strain is present that results in the creation of dislocations and other crystal defects.

The researchers at Fraunhofer ISE have succeeded in overcoming this obstacle. They have managed to localize the defects in a region of the solar cell that is not electrically active. As a result, the active regions of the solar cell remain relatively free of defects ?a prerequisite for achieving the highest efficiencies.

Prof. Eicke R. Weber, Director of Fraunhofer ISE emphasizes, ?This is an especially good example of how the control of crystal defects in semiconductors can lead to a breakthrough in technology.?/font>

This metamorphic crystal growth now enables the researchers to use a much larger range of III-V compound semiconductors for growing their multi-junction solar cells. For these highly efficient structures, it is decisive that the solar spectrum is divided into three equally large spectral regions by a suitable choice of light absorbing materials. In this way all of the three subcells generate the same amount of current. This is an important argument in favor of a serial connected solar cell, where the device current is limited ultimately by the smallest current generated by one of the subcells. By choosing the metamorphic Ga0.35In0.65P/ Ga0.83In0.17As/Ge material combination, a solar cell structure could be chosen for the first time that is completely current matched under the terrestrial solar spectrum. This is what makes the structure so efficient for solar energy conversion and is an important reason for the achievement of the high efficiencies. At a sunlight concentration factor of 454, the researchers in Freiburg set a world record of 41.1%. Even at a higher sunlight concentration of 880, an efficiency of 40.4% was measured.

The high efficiency multi-junction solar cells are used in concentrating photovoltaic systems for solar power stations in countries with a large fraction of direct solar radiation. Fraunhofer ISE is working together with the company Azur Space in Heilbronn as well as Concentrix Solar GmbH in Freiburg to make this technology competitive as soon as possible.

?The high efficiencies of our solar cells are the most effective way to reduce the electricity generation costs for concentrating PV systems,?says Dr. Andreas Bett, Department Head at Fraunhofer ISE. ?We want that photovoltaics becomes competitive with conventional methods of electricity production as soon as possible. With our new efficiency results, we have moved a big step further towards achieving this goal.?/font>

The research on III-V multi-junction solar cells for concentrating photovoltaics at Fraunhofer ISE in the last 15 years has been initially supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF and later as well by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety BMU. Also the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU contributed financially by providing several grants for doctoral students.

It was not until shortly after 1890, more than one hundred years after Linné, that a Japanese named Kokichi Mikimoto invented, or rather re-invented, a method based on the Chinese pearl culture example. Mikimoto was to be the first to develop a reproducible method for the mass production of cultured pearls. Production of truly round, cultured pearls according to yet another method started in 1916, and signaled the worldwide victory of the Japanese cultured pearl.



Mikimoto is considered a national hero in Japan, and school children are taught his life story from an early age. Mikimoto was born in the small harbour town of Toba on Ise peninsula on January 25, 1858. He had unusually large earlobes, which are considered a sign of future wealth in Japan. Kokichi Mikimoto was the eldest son of Otokichci Mikimoto, a noodle maker in the lowest class in Toba at the time.



At the tender age of 11, Mikimoto was forced into the role of provider for the family, when his father fell ill. He investigated for himself the quarter of the pearl dealers in Yokohama, Tokyo in 1878. In1887, the Dowager Empress bought pearls from Mikimoto, and the fame that cam with this recommendation proved helpful when he participated at the National Exhibition of Marine Products in Tokyo in 1888. The first so-called "Mikimoto Pearls" were harvested in 1898, and Europe started to become award of the new pearl product from Japan.



In 1901, Mikimoto published the first extensive catalogue, presenting his first jewelry designs, influenced by western style. He opened a new store directly on Ginza Street, and at the beginning of World War II, a whole chain of Mikimoto shops had opened.

以佛、道教为主要宗教的中国，戴手珠的习惯来自于佛教的念珠，念珠又称作佛珠、数珠等，是人们在念佛时纪录的工具。而念佛是修行佛道基本方法之一，掐算着捻念珠诵经持咒念佛，就能生诸种功德，其最大的利益在于水晶手链可让人凝聚精神、方便修行。在中国民间即使非佛教徒也有配戴佛珠的习惯，因为非佛教徒亦多相信手戴佛珠可保平安。





念珠种类大致分成手珠、持珠及挂珠三大类。念珠也称作佛珠、诵珠、咒珠、数珠等。这里提及的手珠一般是戴在手腕上，亦可随时拿在手上掐捻念佛。念珠的颗数除了常见经书所戴的颗数外，亦有视乎手腕粗细及珠子的大小而定。





经书所载的水晶手珠可分为挂珠、持珠及念珠。颗数大致分为108颗，表示十法界各有一百零八种烦恼，合成为108种烦恼。十法界包括迷的六界，即地狱、饿鬼、畜生、修罗、人间及天上，是六道轮回的世界。后四界是圣者悟的世界，即声闻、缘觉、菩萨及佛界。





108颗——表示求正百八三昧，断除一百零八种烦恼。一百零八种烦恼一般说法是六根（眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意）各有苦、乐、舍三受，合为十八种。六根各有好、恶、平三种，合为十八种，总计三十六种，再以过去、现在、未来三世合为一百零八种烦恼。



54颗——表示菩萨修行的五十四个阶位，即是十信、住、十行、十回向、十地、四善根因地。



42颗——表示菩萨修行过程的四十二种阶位，即是十住、十行、十回向、十地、等觉及妙觉。



36颗——与108颗意义相同。为便于携带将108颗分为三份。



27颗——表示小乘修行四向四果之二十七贤位，即前四向三果之十八有学与第四果阿罗汉之九无学。



21颗——表示十地、十波罗蜜、佛果等二十一位。



18颗——表征十八界（六根、六尘、六识），迷时被十八界转，悟时转十八界。



14颗——表示观音菩萨的十四无畏。





水晶手链中的念珠常附有母珠、数取、记子、记子留等。在经书中也有记载——珠表菩萨之胜果，于中间觉为断漏，绳线贯串表观音，母珠以表无量寿的象征意义。除了一些宗派如密宗对持念珠有一定规定外，其它的记载大多没有严格的规定，一般人佩戴只取其保平安的意思，无太多忌讳。
